An Prediction Market Trader Profited $436,000 on Bets Predicting Maduro's Downfall.

A trader made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was officially announced, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the US operation.

Changing Odds in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the end of January rose in the hours before Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the president had been taken into custody.

One account, which became a member in December and took four positions, all on Venezuela, earned over $436,000 from a starting bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Platform data shows that participants put the odds of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the midday period of the prior Friday.

However the market's assessment had climbed to eleven percent by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the morning of January 3rd, indicating a rapid movement in betting activity right before the public announcement was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a bet based on inside information," commented a financial reform advocate.

Several of other traders also earned significant sums from bets on the same outcome.

Regulatory Scrutiny Grows

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

Proposed legislation introduced on recently would prevent public officials from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in the United States, with participants able to predict everything from elections to politics.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Insider trading is a crime in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market space.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
