The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
